Aluminium honeycomb floor panels for a new sub-basement walkway at the British Museum

Gilcrest Manufacturing were delighted to work with one of the most exceptional museums in the world, the British Museum.

The British Museum attracts over 6 million visitors every year with an extraordinary collection that spans over 2 million years of human history and culture. The world-famous collection includes the Rosetta Stone, Parthenon sculptures, Egyptian mummies and Samurai armour.

Gilcrest Manufacturing’s aluminium honeycomb panels were selected by the British Museum for a new sub-basement walkway.

Specification and requirements of the project

The British Museum required strong and durable floor panels that could withstand the necessary weight load of ancient artifacts and exhibits. As the walkways were built over essential piping and electrics, the panels also needed to be lightweight so that any section below the walkway could be accessed quickly and safely.

Aluminium honeycomb panels to deliver a bespoke solution

Gilcrest Manufacturing supplied and delivered 500m² of FM approved Aluminium honeycomb panelling with a 55mm thickness and a 2mm galvanised steel skin.

The Aluminium honeycomb panels excellent strength to weight ratio meant the floor panels were strong enough to endure loads of up to 2 tonnes whilst being extremely lightweight for easy service access to the sections below the walkway.

Prior to installation, each panel was inspected to ensure manufacturing standards were met. This is supported by an ISO certification, CE marked products and an FM (Factory Mutual) approval.
